Jim ... Pat ... 2011 was the year of some great and poignant exits on the set of Eastenders ....
2012 clearly isn’t.
Whilst it’s been great having Carol Branning back on the square for a while, I can’t help wondering where’s left for character to go ... so cue a perfectly timed exit and rare happy ending as she drives off into the night with her one true love ... just as Pat has boarded her celestial taxi to Frank ....

But what do we get ... a depressing anti-climax (that had me turning over in frustration just in time to miss out on a great cameo from Wicksy!), leaving behind a character whose time has passed, and we’re still stuck with that joy-that-isn’t, Derek Branning! (Please ... PLEASE ... will some forgiving storyliner put us out of our misery and treat him to some of Jean’s sausage surprise!!)
This is Eastenders ... not universally known as the centre of happy-ever-after, so should we really have been surprised? Therefore, despite my better judgement and another round of declaring that I had finally taken the plunge and stopped watching ... I tuned back in .... I’m not sure why I bothered ...
I might not be the biggest fan of Bianca’s incessant whining and melodramatics ... but for even her to force poor Ricky out of the country (with a gentle gloss over where she happened to be at the time of his affair!)... and with barely a hint of remorse for even their children ... Tuesday’s exit may have to go down as one of the worst the show has produced ...
With, I suspect, some big storylines to come ... let’s hope Eastenders can get the magic back for the rest of the year ....
At least we have another live segment to look forward to this year with Billy and the Olympic Torch Relay! A brilliant idea that might just be the thing to make me stick with it ....
