National Television Awards 2012

Great night out at the National Television Awards yesterday .... check out the winners here ....

Particularly loved the nominations this year for best drama ... all brilliant shows; it was always going to be Downton’s year,  but great to see Merlin nominated at long last! .... and a great night for the Doctor Who gang after last year’s disappointments!

A mention also has to go to the brilliant behind-the-scenes moment during the final advert break, (not one likely to become an annual event) .... after running a twitter competition throughout the night, a tweeter was chosen to come down to meet the stars, and two lucky fans made their way down to the VIP area .... hysterical screaming at the sight of TOWIE and Peter Andre would be putting it mildly, before they were rapidly hurried off stage by an appalled floor manager ... to quote, "If only the audience at home could see what just happened!"

If you are going to go hysterical in front of the entire O2 ... at least pick the right show .... you had the knights of Camelot right in front of you!

BBC legal series on track to return for second series this year ...

Glad to see the cast lists for series 2 of BBC drama Silk up on IMDB ... looks like this great series is definitely set to return to our screens at some point this year!

Since the first series hit our screens in Spring 2011 ... here's hoping we shouldn't have too much longer to wait ...

... and if you just can't wait that long ....

Check out the Downton Abbey section on this great fanfiction site for plenty of potential continuations of the Christmas Special ... or simply edited sections from previous series ( ... from Sybil's ball to that classic return in episode 4!)

Enjoy!

Just a few thoughts on the next series of Downton ... (Beware of spoilers!)

With rehearsals about to begin on the third series of acclaimed drama Downton Abbey ... what have we got to look forward to this autumn? With scripts only just being released to the cast, no spoilers have as yet emerged, but here are some of my predictions (and blatant fan-girl hopes) for this autumn ...

The third series spans a period of 18 months in the early 1920s starting shortly after the Christmas Special ... we heard Mary reference the changing hair-styles of Paris back in series 2 ... could such cultural shocks make an appearance in Downton? We’ve seen more than a glimpse of independent spirit in her two sisters, is this the year we see the rebellious side of Lady Edith Crawley?
Interviews with Jessica Brown-Findlay appear to suggest that Lady Sybil will make a return to Downton, and one can assume that Branson will follow .... we all know that Lord Grantham remains uneasy about the marriage, but how will the chauffeur react to life above stairs? I suspect that liberal, and previously middle-class, Matthew may prove a useful intermediary ....

After adding the snowy icing on the cake at Christmas, I fear it’s too much to hope that Julian Fellowes will provide a trial-free series for Mary and Matthew ... with the threat of Carlisle’s exposé, and the even greater fear of Cora, Isobel and Violet let loose on wedding plans .... things are unlikely to run smoothly at Downton for a while yet!

My current prediction ....
Having held the inhabitants of Downton in suspense, Carlisle publishes his story in fury after hearing of Mary’s engagement to Matthew. Whilst a loving and loyal Matthew promises to stand by her, Mary cannot bring herself to subject him to a share in her disgrace and calls off the wedding. However, a crisis at Downton (perhaps involving Sybil and the baby? or Mary in danger?) reunites the couple, and this time he won’t take no for an answer. Hopefully Fellowes will avoid the predictability of delaying the wedding until the end of the series, not least to open up a wealth of fresh storylines as Mary and Matthew get to grips with married life ....
But what of Mr Bates, and the ever loyal Anna? I’m still in the camp of supporting Bates’ innocence .... but whereas I thought Carlisle lay behind it, I’m now not so sure ... again, I imagine this will be a story that continues for a while, but hopefully not for the entire series.   After all, I’m intrigued to see how Carson and Robert would handle Bates’ return as valet now that the scheming Thomas has taken over the role .... with a little assistance from the Crawleys, could this be the perfect opportunity for Anna and Bates to live their dream of the little hotel?

Finally, whilst I hope that given its enormous success we have at least a couple more years ahead, Fellowes has previously reported his intention to stop at a third series. Given that the central story arc has always been the future of Downton and Matthew’s inheritance, might this signal the end for Robert, with the show concluding as Matthew takes up his place as the Earl of Grantham?

National Television Awards 2012

With the National Television Awards just under a week away, time’s running out to have your vote on the best of the best from the last twelve months ....

Not such a great start to 2012 on Albert Square ...

Jim ... Pat ... 2011 was the year of some great and poignant exits on the set of Eastenders ....
2012 clearly isn’t.
Whilst it’s been great having Carol Branning back on the square for a while, I can’t help wondering where’s left for character to go ... so cue a perfectly timed exit and rare happy ending as she drives off into the night with her one true love ... just as Pat has boarded her celestial taxi to Frank ....

But what do we get ... a depressing anti-climax (that had me turning over in frustration just in time to miss out on a great cameo from Wicksy!), leaving behind a character whose time has passed, and we’re still stuck with that joy-that-isn’t, Derek Branning! (Please ... PLEASE ... will some forgiving storyliner put us out of our misery and treat him to some of Jean’s sausage surprise!!)
This is Eastenders ... not universally known as the centre of happy-ever-after, so should we really have been surprised? Therefore, despite my better judgement and another round of declaring that I had finally taken the plunge and stopped watching ... I tuned back in .... I’m not sure why I bothered ...
I might not be the biggest fan of Bianca’s incessant whining and melodramatics ... but for even her to force poor Ricky out of the country (with a gentle gloss over where she happened to be at the time of his affair!)... and with barely a hint of remorse for even their children ... Tuesday’s exit may have to go down as one of the worst the show has produced ...
With, I suspect, some big storylines to come ... let’s hope Eastenders can get the magic back for the rest of the year ....
At least we have another live segment to look forward to this year with Billy and the Olympic Torch Relay! A brilliant idea that might just be the thing to make me stick with it ....
